Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine (Elektroprivreda BiH) plans to invest 1.73 billion marka from 2026 to 2028 to improve coal production, modernise power plants, and grow renewable energy.
The company said on Tuesday that about 538 million marka of the investment will come from its own profits, with the rest to be financed through loans. The investment programme is aimed at strengthening electricity supply reliability and improving the company’s long-term operational performance.
A key focus of the plan remains coal mining, which the utility views as essential for maintaining a stable fuel supply for its thermal power plants. Elektroprivreda BiH said continued investment in coal production is necessary to support the planned operation of its existing facilities.
Major projects scheduled during the investment period include the construction of flue gas desulphurisation and denitrification plants at the Tuzla and Kakanj thermal power plants, measures intended to reduce emissions and improve environmental compliance. The company also plans to reconstruct Block 7 at the Kakanj thermal power plant and carry out revitalisation works on Block 4 at the Tuzla facility. In addition, rehabilitation works are planned at the Salakovac hydropower plant to improve efficiency and reliability.
Alongside conventional energy projects, Elektroprivreda BiH is stepping up its presence in renewable energy. The utility plans to build several solar power plants and is also considering the acquisition of both operational and development-stage renewable energy projects as part of its diversification strategy.
The company expects to produce 5,311.8 gigawatt-hours of electricity in 2026. It also forecasts revenue of 1.3 billion marka and a pre-tax profit of 220,000 marka for the year.
The plans follow a difficult period for the company. Elektroprivreda BiH posted a net loss of 57.6 million marka in 2024, after recording a significantly higher loss of 331.8 million marka in 2023. The new investment programme is aimed at strengthening operations, upgrading facilities, and supporting a steady financial recovery in the years ahead.
