Background
Meta has started testing a stand-alone app for Vibes, its AI-generated short-video feature, as it looks to strengthen its presence in the fast-growing AI video space. The company confirmed the development to TechCrunch on Thursday, saying the move follows strong early engagement with Vibes inside the Meta AI app.
Vibes allows users to create and share short videos generated entirely by artificial intelligence. The feature also offers a scrolling feed where users can discover AI-created videos from others, similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels, but focused only on AI content. Until now, this feed was available only within the Meta AI app.
By launching Vibes as a separate app, Meta aims to offer a more focused and immersive experience while positioning the product as a direct rival to OpenAI’s Sora, an AI video creation and social app launched shortly after Vibes. Meta said users are increasingly using the format to create and share content with friends.
The company did not share user numbers but said Vibes has performed well since its launch. Meta added that overall usage of Meta AI continues to rise, which it sees as a sign of growing demand for AI-powered creative tools.
Vibes lets users generate videos from scratch or remix existing ones from their feed. Before posting, creators can add visuals, music, and style changes. Users can then share videos on the Vibes feed, send them directly to friends, or cross-post to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Meta also plans to test subscriptions for AI features, including Vibes. While the service is currently free, the company expects to introduce a freemium model in the coming months, allowing users to subscribe for more video creation options.
