Yahoo Quietly Removes Diversity Equity and Inclusion Pages

Prime Highlights

  • Yahoo removed its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) web pages, referring visitors to its executive leadership page.
  • The move is part of a larger trend of technology companies diluting public DEI statements amid political and regulatory pressures.

Key Facts

  • Yahoo’s 2022 diversity report and DEI web pages now display “page not found” messages.
  • The company credits deletion to a website redesign with more room for business and advertising solutions.

Key Background

In an unexpected volte-face, Yahoo removed most web pages on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) from its primary website. Individuals searching for DEI content are being sent to the company’s leadership page with executives, and the previously published 2022 diversity report is no longer available. Even though the items were removed, the job listings on Yahoo’s career website still reference the non-existent DEI section, confusing individuals.

Yahoo spokesperson Brenden Lee indicated the site refreshes are part of a larger redesign of the site, which was initiated late in 2024 as part of the relaunch of Yahoo Ads at CES. Lee indicated the initial phase of the redesign was intended to make the site easier for users and set the site up to benefit from the company’s new focus on advertising and business services. In this exercise of consolidation, nearly 60% of the site’s content was eliminated.

This step is all part of a larger shift across the technology industry, with more companies making DEI initiatives more opaque. The change comes amid the Trump administration’s heightened emphasis on examining DEI initiatives. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi directed the Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute DEI initiatives at private firms that receive federal funding.

Other major companies have done the same. Google removed diversity references from its Responsible AI team page and removed diversity hiring targets. OpenAI rebranded its DEI page to a less specific “Building Dynamic Teams” section, removing any explicit reference to diversity. Meta disbanded its DEI team before the new administration and Amazon removed DEI-related language from its annual reports and internal policies.

These actions represent cautiously aimed action by technology firms within a politicized climate wherein DEI is espoused while working in a state of tension in the face of burgeoning legal risks and regulatory ones.
